At the conclusion the interest in their subject matter was well evidenced by the eager queuing for the printed material they supplied. | Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace spoke to her title " My Life in Crime". Her career highlights were fascinating, and she demonstrated that people who are good their job can also be good at promoting police/ community relations. | ||||

We heard case studies of sometimes very dumb bank robbers and the means by which they were caught. | ||||

| Professor Brian Fletcher gave examples of how history evolves as information comes to light, and Historians debate. Hence the content of his talk titled Controversies in Australian History. We are now more fully informed about how we (perhaps) came to be what Australia is. | Air Vice Marshall Gary Beck AO (Rtd) gave us a moving summary of how the Graves of Australian Service Personnel are being carefully and tastefully maintained in over 70 war cemeteries in Australia and New Guinea. He paid special attention to the Gallipoli landing site and surrounds. | ||||

Victorian Rorarian Ian Scott had a vision that established the Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation which initially focused on cot death but has now a very wide focus including mental health. | ||||

| Tony Benson opened our eyes to the future of "Living with Computers in the 21st Century" as part of the progression from the 250 year old Industrial Revolution. Contact Clyde Dickens for a copy of his slide presentation. | Mark Spencer presented an historical record of shipwreck explorations in Australia and the Sea of Marmara, supported by his own wonderful photography. He also outlined some of the dangers of deep sea diving. | ||||

| Stephen Martin presented with photographic enhancement a fascinating outline of the History and Challenges of the Antarctic. He spoke of political issues following exploration, human relations consequences in isolated locations, and the increase in tourism. | Adrian Pilton gave us a concise outline of the changes being made to the Opera House by his firm working with Jan Utzon. 8 people took 8 months to prepare the 3D drawings and models necessary. The Utzon design brief is left open for new ideas. | ||||

| Paul Brunton, Senior Curator of Manuscripts at the State Library of NSW enthralled us with an address about the "Brilliant Career" of Miles Franklin, plus a fascinating insight into acquisition histories for Library items. | Michael Hodgetts told us of the mixture of actual, fictional, religious, and romantic elements in the tantalising tale of King Arthur. Perhaps separating fact from fiction brings sadness in demystifying such romantic pleasure, but it was a great story. | ||||

| Allen Fudge provided a contrast to our March subject with an outline of The Gallipoli Campaign from the Turkish Side. An outstanding personality then and since was their successful leader Kemal Ataturk, later responsible for many peacetime reforms. | Historian Bob Peterson spoke of Australian expectations at the start of the Great War. These were founded on the perceived strength of Britain as a world power and the high percentage (96%) of British heritage in the Australian population at that time. | ||||

Col Ron Corkran (US Army Rtd) provided a personal insight into a most complicated trouble spot with his review of his "Experiences In Afghanistan". His army is well briefed about the history and characteristics of the Afghan people, who have endured generations of difficulties. | ||||

| Joan Ellard treated us to a fascinating insight into the world of male/female drapery crossover throughout history with her learned treatise describing "The History of Cross Dressing from Joan d'Arc to Dame Edna" for reasons including fashion, economics and eccentricity. | Elizabeth Ellis, Mitchell Librarian led us through the history of buildings, people and events that are associated with Memories of Macquarie Street. Her well researched presentation was supported by a remarkable selection of photographs. | ||||

| Stuart Davis left us with vivid impressions of his description of submarines operations and lifestyles of the men (and now women) who crew them. He also related the story of the loss of the Russian boat (not ship) The Kursk. | Carolyn Lowry presented an engaging story of the theatre company and the building named The Independant Theatre. She refreshed our memories of a veritable"who's who" of Australian and international actors. | ||||

| Dr Raymond Hollings related the history of The Monks Of War - Knights of the Middle Ages who were also soldiers, pledged to fight enemies of the Cross, particularly during the Crusades to regain control of the Holy Land from the Muslims. | Derek Jones gave us a fascinating and very topical review of "The Middle East - Maelstrom of Mammon, Manipulation, Militancy and Misery". We now have a better understanding of a key to our future. | ||||

He told us of the planned ecconomy, the lack of shareholder pressure, and company responsibility to staff, the ministry and suppliers. | ||||

| Mathew Brown MP spoke to us about his reasons for having an Australian as Head of Australia. The principal argument was that the Head of Australia should be an Australian selected by merit, not by birthright. | Ray Spinks, Deputy Commander Coast Guard Sydney impressed with the outline he gave of the service to recreational boating provided by his organisation. This includes 24 hour radio monitoring plus search and rescue. | ||||

| Neville Faggotter gave us the details of the story of the MS Gabriella which survived cyclonic winds off the East Coast with a cargo of 50 ton components of a huge slab casting machine on board, but then sank at the wharf in Port Kembla while unloading. | Tim Smith, Maritime Archaeologist with the NSW Heritage Office told us that of the known 6500 shipwrecks nationally 1800 were in NSW. He displayed slides of a number of shipwreck events, mostly photographed at the sea bottom which emphased the deterioration which had occurred. | ||||
