Boosting influenza vaccine responses in older adults using a brief bout of exercise. Volunteers for Study Wanted Click for details. It is recommended that everyone over 65 years receive a ‘flu jab every year. Sadly, even having a vaccine doesn’t always give enough protection. The University of Sydney and the Centre for STRONG medicine at Balmain hospital are running a study to test an exciting new idea that may help vaccines work better and protect us more from deadly diseases. A single short bout of moderate exercise activates the immune system - we have found that performing exercise before receiving a vaccine can strengthen the response in young adults. In this study we’ll be testing this idea in older adults who are most at risk from ‘flu, and need help in boosting their response to the vaccine. If we find that our exercising participants get better protection, this could be a way for everybody to be better protected, and so reduce the suffering caused every year by ‘flu. The NSW Government is currently running a series of public consultations to develop a whole of government ageing strategy.

Several of these consultations are being held in Sydney over the next couple of weeks.

Submissions are also welcome via post, email and phone up until 2 February.
